Chambéry, the capital of the States of Savoy, is located at the crossroads of the north-south axis linking Geneva and Grenoble and the east-west axis linking Lyon and Turin. In this sense, it is a natural European crossroads.
It benefits from an attractive city centre, but also from sites on its outskirts such as the three ZACs of Chambéry and its close proximity to the city of Aix-les-Bains, located 20 km to the north.
The hypercentre is articulated in a disjointed manner with several circuits. Indeed, these market places remain attractive and economic places thanks to their diversified offers, shops and restaurants. In addition, perpendicular to the Halles is the Rue Saint Antoine with the Galeries Lafayette.
Then we have rue Boigne, which starts at the Fontaine des Eléphants, and whose arcades house numerous mid-range shops to reach the Place Saint Léger. These arcades represent the number one commercial axis and are considered the backbone of commerce.
To the south of the town is the Rue de la Croix d'Or marking the entrance to the cultural centre of the town, which is made up of independent shops where the pedestrian flow is weakening.
In order to revitalise its city centre, Chambéry has been involved in the "Opération cœur de ville" programme since 2018.
